Summer 2011

Well I turned fifty this past September and decided I wanted to take a cross country fishing trip when the school year ended in June.   Started shopping for a truck this winter and was lucky enough to find exactly what I was looking for on Craig's List.  Surprisingly, my first Craig's List purchase after all these years of ebay and on-line shopping.  The plan was to start on the Cape and end up in Washington State.  As with many good plans, something comes up and throws a curveball at you.  This spring a great course opportunity arose which meant 5 days in Virginia the end of July.  5 Credits(which will pretty much wrap up my certification renewal for New Hampshire and Vermont(hopefully my last renewal) in part of the country I have never been and sponsored by the Appalachian Trail Organization(cool).  Having to be in Virginia the end of July forbade me from driving the width of the country, thus the plan was altered.  Started on the Vinyard, will fish in the northeast via the truck, a flight to the Bitterroots, then some more truck fishing on the way home from Virginia.

Autumn Brookies

The brilliant tones of red, orange and yellow of our sugar maples and beech trees draws thousands of visitors to my beloved State of Vermont each fall.   Other spellbinding colors rarely observed by those visitors are those of the native brook trout, affectionately know as "square tails".  In my mind, the palette of the lotic world easily matches that of the terrestrial.

Today, August 10th 2010, is a day that my father hoped he would make it to, as it is the 90th anniversary of his birth.   The photo above was taken on the last birthday he celebrated with his family, his 86th.  While not making it to 90, he certainly enjoyed all the years that were given to him.  It was a random goal, kind of like me and my 3:20 marathon.  Didn't happen, not going to, move on.

Happy Birthday Dad, you are ever present in my life.

Love,

Rich
